After waiting for what feels like an eternity Sony is going to tell us about the Playstation 5 on Thursday, September 17 at 6am AEST. To hear what Sony PS5 is going to cost join here.
I’m old enough to remember the Playstation 1 a fair few Console launches. A new Console is nothing new or remarkable. The marketing is meh compared to what it usually is. The most fun about the launch is the design memes!
Now we have a new range of next-gen consoles to rip off about their distinct designs and how they are differentiating themselves from the Microsoft competitor.
The PS5 announcements and hype prompted a new trend online which lasted a few days which was fairly amusing albeit divisive. This was the PS5 Secured memes and I had a fair few pop up in group chats. If you didn’t see any of those, you missed a few fights and arguments.
In terms of revealing pricing Microsoft played their cards first and we know what a X-Box series X and X-Box Series S will be launching for and when. The X-Box Series X and Series S is due out 2nd week November 2020 for AU$ 749 and AU499 respectively. The Microsoft Pre-Orders open on September 22.
Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 (PS5) are the new next-gen games consoles from Microsoft and Sony. The ambition is to deliver graphically impressive gaming to console users, and in Playstation without load screens.
Xbox Series: Microsoft has confirmed the Xbox Series X will release on November 10, 2020.
PS5: “Holiday 2020”. October? November? December?.
I’m focusing on Playstation because that’s the console I’ll be buying. If you want an unbiased article, you best head over to another website.
The Horizon: Zero Dawn Sequel. Horizon II appears to have the same game dynamics as the first, vibrant wildlife, menacing enemies, and a diverse super star female hero which is always nice to see.
From the WAY WAY back in 1997 Grand Theft Auto started as a top-down game. The hours of my youth I wasted on that game…. Now for the re-re-relaunch of a game that’s been going since 2013. Grand Theft Auto 5. It’s coming to Playstation 5 #excite. If you can’t tell how over I am GTA 5…
The great button smashing with Marve’ls Avengers. The game has some depth but its a combo game within the MCU. Not really something I look forward to, but it has a player base.
I remember playing Doom way back in 1993, coming shortly after Wolfenstein 3d, the original run and fun shooters. If you didn’t move, you died. Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake started the shooter genre. The only thing that’s changed from 1993 to today is amazing, eye-watering graphics and metal music.
The Hitman franchise has come some ways since 2000, sneaking and creeping for Agent 47. Sharing some gameplay dynamics from Assassins Creed (2007), Dishonored (2012), Thief (1998), Deus Ex (2000).
Assassin’s Creed is a very storied series. It started in 2017 and with its 12th release, I only hope it comes back to their core and stops being the excessive XP grind that it’s become. The most notable thing from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is Killer chickens. The rest is dumb husband, delivery, go kill some random guy and horrendous voice acting with a thin story.
The story and lore behind Destiny have been well crafted. I’ve enjoyed the Destiny previous six in the series with their large and long single-player campaigns and co-op gaming. From the Alpha to the Belta where Bungee re-recorded the voice over from Peter Dinklage because, well it wasn’t that great. The latest instalment looks like it could be quite impressive and exciting. Comparing Destiny to The Division, the biggest failing is The Division at its core is a duck and cover game with the incredibly tedious Ubisoft grind (see Assassins’ Creed). The Ubisoft thing of late is to make these expansive massively multiplayer online game sandbox titles but then copy and paste the same “content” after you’ve done an hour or two in-game you get bored real QUICK.
Another Ubisoft entry into the list. Watch Dogs from 2014 had some really good beginner content, shared some of the open world Assassins Creed dynamics which was a good start, but used hacking and cracking as a concept. Watch Dogs 2 failed somewhat to deliver because the chosen map location wasn’t really conducive to the genre. Whether Watch Dogs Legion is able to steer clear of the Ubisoft issues, and deliver on being a good game is going to be a good question.
Now we talk about a game that can have ALL the NOPES. Resident Evil Village. I will never, ever play this game. I am defiantly not a Horror and Thriller genre kind of guy.
The Returnal looks like one of those Meh games for me. It looks good though and that’s why I’ve got it on the list.
Spec for Spec
When you look at the X-Box and PS5 head to head they are pretty much the same. The PS5 will run a custom built AMD Ryzen chipset, 8 cores with the Zen 2 Navi Graphics. The CPU is a 3.5 GHz offering 36 compute units running at 2.23 GHz offering 10.28 TFLOPs paired with 16GB GDDR6 with a bandwidth of 448GB/s. There is support for ray tracing. Sony has been toting their new audio via the Tempest Engine.
For Screen Resolution the PS5 supports up to 8K at a 120Hz refresh rate allowing for double 4K and far smoother movement in games. The most interesting of the build at Sony is the use of SSD with a 825GB storage at 5.5GB/s throughput drive (up to 9GB/s compressed data). The plan from Sony is that there is no more loading screens.
The X-BOX similarly uses a customer AMD Zen 2 and RDNA 2, same as the PS5. The X-Box Series X GPU clocks in at 12 Teraflops of compute performance, with 3328 shaders allocated to 52 compute units. The processor is a AMD Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads.
Similar to the PS5 support at 8K and 120Hz. The same GDDR6 ram as the PS5. There isn’t a distinct winner like there was in the previous generation.
