You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t think that sometimes a cover can get it right. Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails said that the Johnny Cash ‘Hurt’ cover was a great honour, saying: “Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that’s something that matters to me.” Some covers are done in jest like Baby One More Time covered by Travis who in true Scottish did it for a laugh only to find that it has a bit of magic to it. All the way through to one of the best Bruce Springsteen covers Blinded by the Light by Manfred Mann’s Earth Band which wouldn’t go amiss on a Guradians of the Galaxy Mix Tape. Sometimes a cover is a surprise like Heartbeats from José González where you really didn’t know that a Swedish outfit did it first.

You have deeply personal songs that bring back memories of more carefree years like Free Fallin’ or where the message in the lyrics just speak to you directly like Against all Odds by The Postal Service or Ed Sheeran singing Skinny Love?

Then there are songs that remind me of games and pastimes from 11 years ago. And songs that take me back 20 to Rex Manning day.

Not everyone is going to agree with my choices, and that’s okay. I’m not here to win a contest for the greatest selection. This is my selection and playlist. Enjoy it.
